Abstract

Aim: The objective of the study is to develop a tool to assess compassionate care in clinical nursing practice. Materials and Method: A mixed-method approach was adopted for the study. The study will be conducted in three phases. Phase 1 includes conceptualization and item generation through theoretical and fieldwork. Phase 2 is the preliminary evaluation of items through pretest, face validity, and content validity. Phase 3 includes the scale refinement, final validation, and comparing the scale items with Jean Watson’s 10 carative factors. Data analysis will include the sociodemographic information, Noblit, and Hares’ step process in qualitative data analysis, content validity index, and reliability tests.

Results: A valid and reliable tool was to measure compassionate care in clinical nursing practice in the Indian setting.

Conclusion: Compassionate care is an important aspect of nursing. It is vital for the provision of quality care. No tools have been developed to assess the construct of compassion in nursing practice. The study will yield a finally validated tool for measuring compassionate care in nursing practice.
